Hands-On Log Truss Construction
September 24 and 25, 2018
at Nicola Logworks
We will build a roof truss made of logs during this 2-day, hands-on course. Robert's layout method is new and easy. The joinery is an improved 'mitered style'.
First you will learn the concepts behind the layout and the joints, and then we will go into the yard to build a truss. You will be working side-by-side with Robert on both days.
This method uses no scribers and no lasers, is not lofting, and yet it produces joints that look like they were scribe-fitted. I think my method is the easiest and best-looking method of truss construction.
You will learn 1) a low-tech approach to lay out joints (just a piece of MDF !), and 2) a method that uses a metal jig that you can build for yourself after the course.
Photos on this page show both methods. Click on any photo to enlarge; then put cursor over photo to magnify.
We will discuss truss engineering only briefly, because this course is all about Truss Layout and Truss Construction.
Most of the attendees will be professional log home builders. But people with ALL skill levels are welcome to attend. Several on the team will be first-time owner-builders.
Please email Robert if you have questions (email link is at bottom of this page "Quick Links").
Bring your own safety gear. Everyone must use eye and ear protection. Also, bring cutting chaps if you will run any tools. A short hand-tool list will be sent to you before the course starts.
Instructional handouts will be provided during the course.
You will arrange and pay for your own accommodation and meals in Merritt, BC.
If you bring a motor home or camper, you can park at Nicola Logworks for no cost. Running water, power, and an outhouse are available.
Class size is limited to provide you with the best instruction. Sign up early so you don't miss out.
If Robert has to cancel the course (very unlikely), you get a full refund of tuition you've paid. If you cancel, you get a refund only if the minimum number of attendees is reached without you.
